There’s nothing edgy about ‘honour killings’

I can’t believe this needs to be said, but the choices of the Festival of Dangerous Ideas suggests it does.

Uthman Badar, spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir in Australia, will be speaking at the Festival on the topic “Honour killings are morally justified”.

How clever.

It has been many years since FODI has shown any desire to live up to its name. Their existences hinge on the flow of government grants, directly or indirectly through the units that make up the art establishment. It’s not here to disrupt the status quo. It is here because, as a Facebook friend snarked, “the whole idea of a Festival of Dangerous Ideas [is to be] some white–person wankery for inner–city latte drinkers to indulge themselves in a trip to the opera house and [provoke] the special feeling of belonging to that special part of society that attends ‘cultural’ events.

So whilst I am openly impressed that FODI has actually gone and proposed a dangerous idea in that context, as far as dangerous ideas go this is quite safe… which is what makes it so dangerous.

It is dangerous in the first instance because the material is justifying murder. Violence is generally accepted as dangerous.

For anyone who, say, might like to think of themselves as culturally enlightened, the barest of philosophical forays will lead you to the subjectivity of morality and/or its experience by the individual.

Armed with this, it is totally conceivable that people who commit what we call “honour killings” have reasons for doing so. It’s a scary rejoinder to the idea of monstrosity as other and seemingly perfect for a crowd seeking “danger”.

This makes it a safe bet. It’s destined to light up blogs like this, and papers and talkback tomorrow, and possibly the 6pm news from earlier this evening. Helen Dale – who has lit up the local media a few times, including this week – called the decision to give Badar a platform “the intellectual equivalent of streaking”, which is so right not just because it’s flashy, insubstantive, and guaranteed to get your eyeballs on the dangly bits, but also because it isn’t novel.

We know that attention will be paid because we have had these debates before. We have had these debates before because there are millions of people who believe murder is a prurient respond to the exercise of certain kinds of autonomy – but they’re other, safely ‘over there’, and the unbridled, uncritical acceptance of the other is how the worst sort of unthinking leftist gets their counter-cultural jollies.

It will be controversial. Why millions of people would hold values so far removed from our own always will be.

And thus we have Badar at FODI, surrounded by the latte elite, who have already started falling over themselves to demonstrate their open-mindedness by paying to listen to a man who fronts the national arm of an organisation that opposes the close-mindedness of a Western liberalism that would go back to stoning women if the culture wasn’t so close-minded.

If an open-mind is worth keeping on this issue this is still not a justification for FODI’s decision. The point of keeping an open mind is to think, judge, and close it eventually. If it never closes it is no great feat of mind, but the simple abrogation of critical thought. FODI is, by choosing to give this violent idea a platform, abrogating that responsibility in the name of whoring themselves out for attention. This is not an act without consequences; what we say in public sends a powerful message about (are you ready for this?) what is is acceptable to say and do in public.

They’re not concerned about that, nor are they actually concerned about whether we should kill slutty sluts for slutting. They’re concerned about how they can leverage Uthman Badar and the Hizb ut-Tahrir brand and the white guilt that creates the cultural relativism that baby leftists are injected with when they submit their first protest poster for assessment, in service of painting the Festival and it’s supporters as open-minded, critically engaged and edgy, and getting the attention that gets them paid. With taxpayer dollars.

If open engagement is what we desire there’s an endless supply of literature on the subject that could be privately consumed. Somehow I don’t think that’s what Hizb ut-Tahrir wants.

That is what I find the most dangerous – it’s lovely to have organisations like FODI that self-consciously hike their skirts and whore their stages in the pretence of glorying in liberalism while trying to undermine it. These ideas don’t deserve to be paraded on a platform as flimsy as amusement. There is no honour in giving a microphone to a man who doesn’t want to give the microphone back, when he will use it to promote a ban on microphones.

FODI sets its own agenda. They made a considered choice to offer the stage to a lobbyist for Islamototalitarianism to promote the murder of (mostly) women.

If FODI wants to truly be provocative, there are orthodoxies far better challenged than the secular, liberal, individualist democracy that permits people – including women – to pursue the free thought that allows them to consider and reject the killing women who exercise autonomy could be totally sweet.

FODI has the right to offer the PR flak for totalitarian organisation a space on its platform, and its secular “cultural establishment” type audience is mature enough to consider the idea without accepting it (the way the Murdoch-media-swilling general publicans apparently cannot, no doubt). Minds aren’t likely to slip out from under the warm, prosperous blanket of liberalism for the rock hard reality of whatever backwards logic makes it okay to kill for a contorted derivative of honour.

Britain to classify “Islamist Extremism” as a dissimilar ideology to Islam

Britain plans to classify "Islamist extremism" as a distinct ideology, British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday, as part the government's response to the murder of a soldier on a busy London street.

Cameron said he would implement recommendations he had received from a task force he set up after the murder of Lee Rigby in May, to try to stop people being radicalised by "hate preachers".

…"Islamist extremism" would, for the first time, be classified as a distinct ideology to guard against it being confused with traditional religious practice, he said.

Cameron wants to tackle violent ideologies that claim Islamic justification but by doing so in a way that does not alienate Britain's 2.7 million Muslims.

The fact is that when Islam checks in, a lot of folks wind up checking out… permanently.

Sharia law coming to a swimming pool near you

It has been VCAT policy in Dandenong since Sept 2010

Via Allen West

Quote

…Thanks to the website, “Creeping Sharia” we have a another stealthy example. It seems that in Minnesota — St. Paul to be exact — the YMCA and St. Paul Police are accommodating the burgeoning Somali Muslim community.

There have been previous reports from the Minneapolis/ St Paul area regarding Muslim taxi drivers who refused fares to individuals with dogs or carrying alcoholic beverages from the airport. I also recall an instance where a Muslim cashier worker at a Target store refused to touch pork products for scanning and bagging.

Now, as written in the Star Tribune by Nicole Norfleet, the YMCA and police have started a swim group for young Somali girls ages 5-17. The issue is that special considerations are being made to address modesty concerns so that the Muslim girls can swim and not reveal too much of themselves.

According to the report, during the hourlong swim practice, all other swimmers are cleared out of the pool. The men’s locker room is locked and female life guards are brought in. “I think this is just a great opportunity for them to learn basic skills that we take for granted,” said Sgt. Jennifer O’Donnell, who has worked with the Somali community regularly during her time with the department.

I would have thought that teaching the basic skills of liberty and freedom for all people would be a better lesson. Should we not instead be teaching these young girls that America is a land of equality of opportunity and they need not be castigated as a second class citizen?

Why is it that America must accept this cultural norm and the Somali community not accept ours? “We have to have privacy,” said Ubah Ali, who is the mother of 12 year old Rayan Dhamuke. During the past summer, the little girl had to visit the pool at 5 a.m. so that she would have the privacy she needed to enjoy the water while still adhering to her family’s cultural and religious beliefs.

This is how it subtly begins, the emotional tug to allow the young girl “privacy” to swim. Hani Hussein, who volunteers at the Al-Ihsan Islamic Center in St. Paul, said she looked into reserving public pools for girls, but it was too expensive.

You can only imagine the outcry from the ACLU and atheist organizations if a Christian group were advocating for “private” swim time. I thought our country struck down the concept of “separate but equal?”

Why would Somalis come to America if they wanted to maintain their discriminatory cultural and religious beliefs? And where is Sandra Fluke to decry this as a “War on Women?”

I know, the usual detractors will call me and others “Islamophobic” but no label will deter our efforts to tell the truth.

Morgan Poll: 96.5% of Australian’s disagree that Christmas, Easter & ANZAC Day should no longer be celebrated

Guaranteed to be dismissed by the left as Islamophobia.

Via Sheik Yer Mami

Quote

According to a recent Morgan poll (October 2013) conducted on behalf of Q Society of Australia Inc., the majority of Australians are clearly concerned about Islam and 70% believe Australia is not a better place because of Islam. The survey, completed in late October, found a majority (53 per cent) of Australians want full face coverings banned from public spaces and 50.2 per cent want Islamic sharia law banned all together.

Australians over 65 are most concerned with 59 per cent in this age group stating that a growing Islamic population and Islamic immigration would be bad for Australia. Mature Australians and Liberal/National voters have a significantly negative view of Islam. Notably only 15 per cent of Australians think Islam and terrorism are not related. Multicultural advocates seeking to cancel Christmas, Easter or ANZAC Day celebrations in their quest to not offend other cultures should take note that 96.5 per cent of the population disagree.

The omnibus poll conducted by Roy Morgan Research Ltd has an error margin of 4 per cent.

In Summary:

  • 38 percent: a growing Islamic population and Islamic immigration are bad for Australia

  • 44 percent: strong, clear link between Islam and terrorism

  • 50 per cent want the Shari’a banned

  • 53 percent: ban the burqa from public spaces

  • 57 percent: Concerned about Islam in the world today

  • 70 percent: Australia is not becoming a better place because of Islam

UK school threatens to label primary school children “racist” if they don’t attend an Islamic workshop

More stupid Muslim appeasement from the progressive left.

Via the Daily Mail

Quote

Parents were ordered to send their children to a workshop on Islam or have them labelled as racist for the rest of their school career.

They were sent a letter warning that the primary school pupils would have a ‘racial discrimination note’ put on their records if they did not go.

Families were told to pay £5 per child for the Explore Islam trip next Wednesday to Staffordshire University, which would involve Year 4 and Year 6 children being shown Islamic artefacts.

Here's the letter from the school. Note the letter doesn't dare state the workshop will cover Islam.

Letter for Islam workshop

In the end, the dumbass school backed the foxtrot down.

I’ll say it again, Islam runs counter to every single progressive left ideology, but because the right doesn’t like Islam, progressives continue to make excuses for it. The facts are, should Islam ever become the majority, it will be the progressives that will be targeted first by the Islamists.

Only the gullible West allows Hizb ut-Tahrir to spread their anti-liberal democracy poison

Islam runs counter to every single progressive left ideology, but because the right doesn’t like Islam, progressives continue to make excuses for it.

Via the Australian

Quote

Hundreds of Muslims attending a community meeting in western Sydney were warned yesterday that they should refuse to co-operate with Australian governments and their agencies, including ASIO and the federal police.

The annual conference of Hizb ut-Tahrir heard speakers say the federal government had a covert plan to marginalise and suppress activist and traditionalist Islam under the guise of engagement and fostering harmony with moderates in the community.

Now let’s shine the light on Hizb ut-Tahrir

Hizb ut-Tahrir (the Party of Islamic Liberation) is banned in virtually all Arab nations in the Middle East, such as Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt. It is banned in Tunisia and Libya, and also Turkey. It is regarded as such a threat that it is even banned in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, which are already cauldrons of Islamic extremism. It is banned in all the former Soviet states in Central Asia, and since February 2003 it has been banned in Russia. It has been banned in Germany - on account of its anti-Semitism and its desire to use force for political ends – since March 2003, and it is also banned in the Netherlands. Yet in Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia, the group remains free to operate.

Hizb ut-Tahrir explicitly rejects democracy and favours sharia – Islamic law – as the law of the land. It is left up to the Caliph and his deputies to interpret and apply it and thereby solve all social, economic, and ethnic problems that the ummah (the Islamic community) may face. Arabic will be the only state language. One element that makes Hizb ut-Tahrir different from many other Islamist groups is that the group has ‘welcomed’ female members. However, women are barred from key positions in the proposed Caliphate such as that of Caliph, Chief Judge, and provincial governors (you taking note Emily’s List?). An amir (defense minister) will be appointed by the Caliph to prepare the people for and to wage war (Jihad) against non-believers.

Although it can be interpreted in many different ways, restriction and punishment are common elements of Sharia as followed by extremists:

  • An eye for an eye
  • Drinkers (of alcohol) and gamblers must be whipped.
  • Homosexuals must be put to death
  • Adulterers must be stoned to death
  • It’s ok for men to hit their women if they want to
  • If you say anything negative about Islam, you can be put to death

Like the Beatles bringing rock’n’roll into the mainstream, the Taliban helped shed the light on how extreme Sharia law can be. They banned kite flying, prevented girls from going to school and can you believe it, even outlawed music – Sorry Beatles, that means you lads too.

Sharia also mandates that anyone who converts from Islam to another religion must be executed. But at least you get a choice – Islamic fundamentalism or death. Who knew the Hizb ut-Tahrir was so prochoice?

Islamic extremists, such as Hizb ut-Tahrir, understand that our greatest strength – our freedom – is also our greatest weakness. We hold our freedoms above almost everything. We believe in a fair go and that she’ll be right. But here’s a news flash people – Hizb ut-Tahrir don’t. They’re disgusted by our Western values such as freedom, democracy or the very thought of women being equal to men.

Most Muslims have a private spiritual life and are quite happy to live in a country where they can practice their faith freely and openly. But extremists don’t want a ‘private spiritual life’ – they want a political system that makes faith a very public, state oriented system. At first I didn’t get it but now I do. It’s all about politics, not religion. In the world of Islamic extremism there is no separation of mosque and state because their church is their state. Their religious leaders are their political leaders and those leaders are happy to give you a simple choice: Live under Islamic Sharia rule or die.

Islamic group calls woman who robbed a bank in a Burqa ‘Ignorant’ after she called the clothing ‘Oppressive’

Too funny…

Via ABC 10 News

Quote

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. – "It is absolutely hurtful." Those are the words from the executive director of San Diego's Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, after learning the woman who dressed in a burqa and tried to rob a National City bank last summer told 10News it was the perfect disguise.

Elysia Roiz told 10News she was desperate for money to support her 2-year-old special needs son when she decided to wear a burqa to rob the Wells Fargo on Highland Avenue.

It did not work. After she passed a demand note to the teller, the teller pushed a panic button and Roiz escaped without a dime. She was arrested two months later in Tijuana.

Roiz admitted it was not fair to dress in religious garb to commit a crime.

"I know in other countries they've outlawed it, because of people, mostly men hiding firearms inside burqas, and I don't think it was fair of me to exploit that, but what better costume, you know what I mean?" Rois asked, adding that the garment should be outlawed. "I don't want to be disrespectful, but I mean, that stuff is so oppressive, like I mean, we fought a lot in the 70s, women did, so that kind of stuff didn't happen, doesn't happen."

She added, "There's other ways to express religion."

Hanif Mohebi, the executive director of CAIR, told 10News, "It is obviously ignorance. No one has or should use any symbols or clothing of religious in order to commit any crimes."

He added that Roiz's actions could lead to discrimination against other mothers.

"So essentially, this is a double crime," Mohebi said.

Indonesia’s top Muslim Clerics demand Catholic schools teach Islam

Moderate Islam in action…

Via Asia
News

Quote

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – The Indonesian
Ulema Council (MUI) has once again stirred up controversy over the fact that
Islam is not taught in the country's Catholic schools. The latest case involves
a Catholic school of Klanten in Central Java. Last year, the same thing was
front-page news for weeks in Blitar (East
Java Regency) and Tegal until
Muslim parents came out in defence of the Catholic schools where their children
study, emphasising their high level of education.

Hartoyo, the MUI leader in Klanten,
urged all private schools, including Catholic ones, to hire qualified staff to
teach the Islamic religion to Muslim students. In his view, the absence of
Islamic religious teachers is a grave violation of the law because every
student should be able to receive lessons in his or her religion.

The local association of private
schools (BMPS) agrees. Slamming the lack of Muslim teachers, it demanded that a
solution be found and the problem solved "in the best possible way."

In reality, following a decades-old
practice, Indonesia's private Christian schools, including Catholic ones, are
not required to offer courses on Islamic religion or time off to read the
Quran, as is the case in state schools. They do however provide seminars and
lectures on the Christian religion and catechism.

Muslim students who go to Catholic
schools take instead Islamic religious courses sponsored by their own Islamic
community.

It should also be noted that school
administrators go out of their way to reassure Muslim parents that Catholic
schools do not try to "convert" students and that Christian
proselytising is banned.
